Phantastesis an epic fairy tale by the godfather of the fantasy genre, George MacDonald. MacDonald was the most significant literary influence on C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, and also impacted Lewis Carroll, Charles Williams, and Madeline L'Engle.
InPhantastes, the main character, newly-21 Anodos, journeys through Fairy Land and encounters magical, mystical, and malevolent creatures. His adventures in Fairy Land challenge, threaten to consume, and ultimately change him—the once self-absorbed youth becomes a self-sacrificing man.
